Routers
You can find two types of router: Plunge routers and fixed-base routers. They are more similar than you might think. Why would you buy one of each? Because each type has its advantages. A plunge router is the best choice for making a stopped cut- one that does not extend all the way to the end of a workpiece. This would be best for a groove, a dado, a rabbet or a mortise.
On the other hand a fixed-base router is lighter and more compact than a plunge router with the same horsepower. You would use the fixed-base router for work that doesn't involve stopped cuts. For example if you wanted to create a profile on let say a table top you would use a fixed-based router.
