Router Bits

If you've bought your router unpacked it and figured out how to power it on, your next step is (yep you guess it) router bits. The big questions is always which bit should I buy?
High quality router bits are not cheap so you don't want to start buying every sets of router bits you see. The type of work you intend to do will determine the types of bits you will get.

I will provide you with a brief summary of type of router bits and their use. First of all you will need to make sure you match the shank of your router bits with the router your purchased. The two common shank size are 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch.

Straight Bits
Straight Bits are used mostly for cutting grooves and Dadoes. A groove is cut along the long grain of a board while the dado is cut across the grain. A straight bit makes quick work of both tasks and gives you grooves of uniform size.
